Detroit Man Faces Felony Charges in Connection with Fatal Electric Bicycle Crash

Eastpointe, Michigan - A Detroit man is now facing multiple felony charges in relation to the tragic death of a man riding an electric bicycle in Eastpointe. Clinton Donzell Laws, aged 52, appeared for his arraignment at the Eastpointe District Court on Friday, following a fatal crash that occurred on Tuesday, August 8.

According to law enforcement officials, Laws was operating his truck while under the influence of alcohol in Eastpointe when the collision with the bicyclist took place at the intersection of Gratiot Ave. and Stephens.

The bicyclist, whose identity remains undisclosed, was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash.

Subsequent investigation revealed that both full and empty alcohol bottles were found within the suspect's vehicle. Additionally, authorities discovered a cooler in the truck containing ice and full beer bottles.

The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office announced that Laws has been charged with three counts, including Operating while Intoxicated Causing Death, a felony that carries a potential 15-year sentence, Driving While License Suspended Causing Death, also a 15-year felony, and Driving with an Open Alcohol Container in a Vehicle, classified as a 90-day misdemeanor.

A bond of $600,000 cash/surety only, without the option of 10% payment, has been set. If Laws manages to post bail, a magistrate stipulated that he must wear an alcohol/GPS tether, adhere to home confinement, abstain from drug and alcohol use, and remain within the state's boundaries.

"This incident serves as a reminder that the choices we make have far-reaching consequences and we will seek accountability for the loss that occurred," stated Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido.

Laws is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing on August 22, followed by a preliminary examination scheduled for August 29. As the legal proceedings continue, the incident underscores the gravity of decisions made while operating a vehicle and the responsibility individuals bear for their actions.
