In a decisive move to address the rising number of pedestrian-involved accidents in Michigan, law enforcement agencies are taking action to ensure road safety.
“Just this morning, we had a serious pedestrian accident on Hall Road,” revealed Sgt. Kenneth Rumps of the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office. “Hall Road has been a frequent site for such incidents, primarily due to the considerable distance between traffic lights.”
While the incident remains under investigation, initial findings suggest that the injured individual may have been jaywalking.
Startling statistics from the Michigan State Police demonstrate a concerning uptick in pedestrian-related fatalities on Michigan roads over the past three years. The data reveals that from 2020 to 2022, 531 pedestrians lost their lives in Michigan, marking a 17% increase compared to the previous three-year period.
In an unsettling trend, the past five years have shown October as the deadliest month for pedestrians in Michigan, according to MSP.
To tackle this issue head-on, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, will be intensifying efforts to raise awareness and prevent injuries and fatalities involving pedestrians on roadways. Their strategy includes deploying additional patrol units at busy intersections to ensure both drivers and pedestrians adhere to the law and remain safe.
“They’ll be stationed at key intersections, keeping a watchful eye on individuals jaywalking, bicyclists not following road rules, pedestrians crossing outside designated crosswalks, speeding violations, and instances where vehicles obstruct crosswalks,” Sgt. Rumps explained. “Violators will receive either a ticket or, in some cases, a verbal warning designed to educate and raise awareness.”
This crucial initiative has received substantial support from federal traffic safety funds allocated by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The program is being coordinated by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning and has garnered the participation of multiple law enforcement departments, including the Detroit police and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
Over the period spanning 2018 to 2022, Macomb County recorded a distressing 60 pedestrian fatalities, earning the county the unfortunate distinction of ranking third for deadly accidents in the state.
