East Lansing, MI – Michigan State University (MSU) has terminated an instructor following revelations of his connection to a suspected drug lab in another state, dating back to three years ago.

The instructor, whose identity has not been disclosed, was reportedly linked to a case involving a suspected drug lab in Thibodaux, Louisiana. The incident in question transpired in March 2020 when a resident in Thibodaux discovered remnants of a meth lab. According to a press release from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, an observer noticed smoke emitting from a bucket and trash bag beneath a bridge over a canal.

In the aftermath of the discovery, the instructor, referred to as Doyle, along with another individual named Julia Canto, were identified as suspects, leading to the initiation of arrest warrants. However, Doyle and Canto reportedly fled the state, thereby evading authorities.

It wasn’t until nearly two months later, on May 18, 2020, that law enforcement agents apprehended Doyle when he returned home and was seen packing a moving truck.

Doyle was subsequently booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex and charged with “creation or operation of a clandestine laboratory for the unlawful manufacture of a controlled dangerous substance.” Following his arrest, he was released on bail after posting $20,000.

Brennan Matherne, the public information officer for the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, stated that records pertaining to this case have been expunged, and therefore, no further comments can be made.

A report by Fox 17 last week revealed that Doyle pleaded guilty in January 2021 and received a 180-day sentence, of which he served 90 days.

Before his arrest, Doyle was a biology instructor at Nicholls State University in Louisiana, as reported by the school’s student newspaper.

While records from Michigan State University listed Doyle as a kinesiology faculty member this year, the institution’s spokesperson, Dan Olsen, disclosed that a kinesiology professor had been placed on leave in September and was officially terminated on Monday. Olsen, however, did not reveal the name of the instructor or the specific details surrounding the leave.
