Police are providing additional information regarding the officer-involved shooting that transpired at Big Beaver and Rochester on Tuesday afternoon, involving a 25-year-old Detroit man.

According to authorities, the suspect, who is now in custody and in stable condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the upper body, allegedly attempted to run down a Troy police officer at the time of the incident. The passenger, a 20-year-old male from Detroit, was wanted on two felony warrants during the encounter and was treated for minor injuries incurred when the suspect tried to evade the vehicle stop.

The driver’s identity has not been disclosed yet, pending the filing of charges.

The sequence of events leading to the shooting began when Troy police were alerted to a stolen vehicle by a Flock license plate reader camera. The vehicle, stolen on November 6 from a Southfield car dealership, prompted officers to attempt to box it in on E Big Beaver, west of Daley, when it was halted at a traffic signal.

“The driver of the stolen vehicle began to ram his way out of the attempted box and then drove straight at an Officer who had exited his vehicle to make an arrest,” stated the police release. “The Officer fired five rounds from his service weapon and struck the driver in the upper body one time.”

Subsequently, the suspect collided with another vehicle a short distance away before being apprehended.

While the passenger has been released from the hospital, he remains in custody due to two active felony warrants from other local jurisdictions.

Troy police clarified that during the investigation, all five rounds discharged by the officer were accounted for within the suspect’s vehicle. The ongoing investigation aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further updates will be shared as the investigation progresses.
