Police-Involved Shooting in Troy Following Pursuit of Stolen Vehicle

A police-involved shooting unfolded on East Big Beaver Rd. in Troy as officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle, sparking a dramatic incident around 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Earlier that day, a “Be On the Lookout” (BOLO) alert was issued for a blue SUV reported stolen from Southfield. Utilizing a license plate reader, Troy police identified the stolen vehicle, and an attempt to pull over the driver ensued. However, the driver refused to comply.

In an effort to apprehend the suspect, officers initiated a maneuver to box in the vehicle on East Big Beaver Rd., west of Daley St., as detailed in a Facebook post by the Troy Police Department. Amidst traffic, the suspect, determined to evade capture, began ramming into surrounding cars.

As the situation escalated, the suspect allegedly drove towards a police officer on foot. In response to the imminent threat, the officer discharged their weapon multiple times, striking the suspect at least once and bringing the vehicle to a halt.

Witnesses, including Ashley, a mother of two, described the tense scene. Ashley, stopped at a red light with her toddlers in the backseat, heard what initially sounded like fireworks. Realizing it was gunfire, she witnessed a man standing outside a vehicle with a gun pointed at another vehicle.

Fearing for her and her children’s safety, Ashley promptly left the area. The suspect, apprehended after being shot, was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

A passenger in the stolen vehicle sustained minor injuries during the suspect’s attempts to flee and also received medical attention.

To facilitate the on-site investigation, the vicinity of E. Big Beaver Rd. and Rochester Rd. experienced temporary closures throughout the day. Authorities are conducting a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
