Troy Dwayne Santos Pleads Guilty in Fatal Halloween Night Shooting

Troy-Santos

Pontiac, MI – In a chilling turn of events, Troy Dwayne Santos pleaded guilty on Monday for a fatal shooting that occurred on Halloween night two years ago outside a Pontiac grocery store.

Santos, 31, opened fire, fatally injuring 39-year-old Frederick Betty in the back and also causing injuries to another man who was with him, fortunately surviving the attack.

Pleading guilty to second-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, and two counts of felony firearm, Santos also acknowledged the habitual second offense notice. The potential consequences for the 31-year-old now include a maximum sentence of life imprisonment or any term of years.

The incident unfolded as the victim left the Lions Food Market at 640 Auburn just after 7 p.m., encountering Santos approaching the store. Without warning, Santos began shooting as the victim looked back.

Supervisory Deputy Aaron Garcia of the US Marshals expressed the investigators’ uncertainty about the motive behind the shooting, given that Santos and the deceased were reportedly friends. The brazen act shocked the community, as people were going about their business in and out of the grocery store.

Frederick Betty suffered two gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to the hospital. The second victim sustained injuries to the foot.

After the shooting, Santos fled, becoming a wanted fugitive. The US Marshals, in collaboration with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, intensified the search, leading to Santos’s capture a year later.

Santos, with a criminal history including convictions for unlawfully driving away an automobile and domestic violence, also had warrants for unpaid child support from the Friend of the Court.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald emphasized accountability for those engaging in violent crime, stating, “Today’s plea guarantees the safety of our community, and I hope it provides the victim’s family and friends some comfort.”

Santos will remain in the Oakland County Jail until sentencing, scheduled for January 9, 2024, at 9 a.m.
