A bill has been passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, potentially leading to a ban on TikTok across the nation. On Wednesday (March 13), the bill was passed in the American Parliament Congress with a vote of 352-65. According to BBC News.
Though this bill has passed, it has not yet become law in the United States. After passing in the House of Representatives, the bill will now be sent to the Senate for review, verification, and, upon passing, will be forwarded to the White House. The bill will be fully enacted upon President Joe Biden’s signature.
It seems the outcome of the vote in the Senate may mirror that of the House of Representatives, as the lower chamber’s Republican Party’s number 2, House Republican Steve Scalise, has already expressed his hopes for the Senate to understand the bill’s significance and pass it.
Among the 330 million residents in the United States, nearly 170 million people use TikTok. That means half of the country’s total population uses TikTok. Most of these users are young people.
Previously, in 2021, American citizens had expressed stronger concerns about personal data theft in TikTok. Consequently, Washington banned the use of this app by American military personnel and employees. This year, the Biden administration has taken steps to completely ban TikTok in the country.
