Anthony David Mangiapane, a 56-year-old resident of Warren, has been convicted of a hate crime following an incident where he threatened and fired shots at a Black man walking by his Warren business. The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office reported that the incident occurred on July 25, 2022.

According to authorities, Mangiapane, who was at his Warren business during the incident, directed racial slurs at the victim and discharged a firearm in his direction. The victim, on the other side of the street at the time, immediately called 911 to report the incident.

Upon responding to the scene, police discovered a rifle casing outside Mangiapane’s business. Initially, Mangiapane refused to exit the premises, reportedly barricading himself inside. However, he later surrendered and was taken into custody.

During the trial on Tuesday, November 21, a Macomb County jury found Mangiapane guilty on multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, ethnic intimidation, and felony firearm possession. The verdict emphasizes the serious nature of the offense and its classification as a hate crime.

Mangiapane now faces the possibility of an eight-year prison sentence for his convictions. The sentencing phase will determine the extent of his legal consequences, reflecting the severity of the charges. The conviction serves as a significant outcome in the pursuit of justice against hate crimes within the community.
