A disturbing incident unfolded last week as Selena Martin, a 25-year-old Warren woman, faces serious charges after allegedly abandoning a puppy in a dumpster and subsequently engaging in a high-speed car chase with the police.
Martin was formally arraigned in the 47th District Court in Farmington Hills last Thursday, charged with second-degree fleeing police, a felony, and driving a vehicle with a suspended license, a misdemeanor. The presiding judge set her bond at $10,000, scheduling a preliminary examination hearing for the upcoming Wednesday.
If convicted, Martin could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison for the fleeing police charge and an additional year for driving with a suspended license.
This is not Martin’s first encounter with the law; she has previous convictions for fleeing and eluding police. According to authorities, Martin was convicted on August 5, 2021, in Oakland County Circuit Court and again on September 10, 2021, in Wayne County Circuit Court.
The recent charges stem from an incident last Wednesday when officers attempted to pull over Martin’s vehicle for a traffic violation on Haggerty Road near 10 Mile during rush hour. Instead of complying, Martin accelerated, maneuvering through traffic and even venturing into oncoming lanes. The pursuit was eventually terminated by the police due to the suspect’s reckless driving.
Despite the discontinuation of the chase, Martin continued her erratic driving for about six miles, reaching speeds exceeding 100 mph on Grand River Avenue and utilizing the shoulder to overtake other motorists. The pursuit finally ended when her vehicle collided with another on Orchard Lake south of 12 Mile, resulting in significant damage and immobilization.
Farmington Hills Police Chief Jeff King, coincidentally in the vicinity, witnessed the suspect’s vehicle speeding in a right-turn-only lane at approximately 90 mph. The subsequent crash prompted officers to respond to the scene, addressing the situation after multiple 911 calls were received.
This incident underscores the severity of Martin’s actions, combining animal cruelty with a history of eluding law enforcement, leading to potential severe legal consequences.
