In a heart-wrenching incident at the intersection of Woodward and Huron Street in Downtown Pontiac on September 15, Jessica Kellar, a 30-year-old Waterford woman, is facing serious charges for a drunk driving crash that claimed the life of a 70-year-old man on a motorcycle.

Kellar, arraigned on Thursday, now confronts charges of operating while intoxicated causing death and operating while intoxicated with occupant less than 16. According to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, the collision occurred when Kellar, allegedly under the influence, turned left into the path of the motorcycle.

The victim, a 70-year-old White Lake man, was tragically thrown into the air and struck. Pronounced dead at the scene, the consequences of the incident are devastating. Kellar, who reportedly had a blood alcohol level over the legal limit, faces additional scrutiny for having a minor in the pickup truck at the time of the crash.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald emphasized the dangers of driving under the influence, stating, “No one should be operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and those who choose to do so will be held accountable.”

During her arraignment, bond was set at $25,000 cash/surety or 10%, with additional restrictions, including the wearing of an alcohol tether and a prohibition from driving or entering establishments dispensing alcohol. Kellar’s next court appearance is scheduled for November 21.

The gravity of the situation is reflected in the charges: OWI causing death carries a felony punishment of up to 15 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine. Additionally, OWI with a minor in the car is a misdemeanor, potentially leading to a year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. This tragic incident underscores the importance of responsible and sober driving for the safety of all road users.
